This chart provides a breakdown of students based on a metric data points. This view will allow for easy identification of data points where the students are lagging behind.
Where to Start
To view the chart, open the Metric Analysis Menu and choose Breakdown Analysis.
There are four menu options for this chart, Metrics (required), Plot (required), Compare (required) and Filter (optional).
Step 1 – Choose the Metric
Metric(required) Defines the levels for the Metrics Analysis charts. Users can choose from our preset metrics or build their own. Instructions for building a metric are here.
Step 2 – Choose Which Data Points to Plot
Plot Defines what data is to be charted in separate bars, i.e. 3-8 ELA exam and English Regents. A separate bar will be created for each plot option for each comparison option chosen. The plot options for the Breakdown Analysis chart are:
- Metric Condition plots a bar for an individual data point used in the metric or the overall result
- Metric Condition Category plots a bar for a related category of data points used in the metric (i.e., all attendance data points).
Three plot options are defined for the chart, so three bars will be displayed on the chart.
- Metric Total Outcome Metric Outcome. A bar graph will display the level for each student based on all data points included in the metric.
- Metric Conditions Year to Date Attendance. A bar graph will display the level for each student based on this data point and its defined data ranges.
- Metric Conditions Total YTD Latenesses. A bar graph will display the level for each student based on this data point and its defined data ranges.
Step 3 – Chose Which Student Populations to Compare
Compare Defines the students to be included in the chart, i.e. my school or class. Multiple student populations can be chosen and displayed on the same chart. This will allow for direct comparisons on the metric data points.
There are three drop downs in the compare options. The first defines the school year and term. The second defines the compare type, i.e. School, Gender, Group. The third defines the population, i.e. Male or Female.
An Example of Choosing Plot Options
Four student populations are defined for this chart. For the active school year and term, Grade Levels of 9, 10, 11 and 12 are chosen. This will create a chart with groups of bars for each of those grade levels.
Step 4 – Choose a Filter (optional)
Filter Limits data in chart to a subset of students, i.e. ELL students [in my school or class]. Click Filter at the upper left to see the filter menu. If a filter was used in defining a metric, it will be automatically used for this chart.
Click Execute Chart to view the results.
The bar charts display the number of students in each metric data point or category. In our example, there are 4 groups of 3 bars each as we chose 4 compare options and 3 plot options.
The chart can be printed by clicking the print icon at the upper right of the chart. The data aggregates can be downloaded into excel by clicking Aggregates, also at the upper right.
Clicking on a piece of the bar will display a student list with all of the students in that level. The list will contain the student name and ID number, the level and data value for each of the data points included in the chart and other demographic information.
The menu located at the upper right of the student list allows you to Search the list, Download the list, Show/hide the columns in the list and add the students in the list to a group. Clicking the clicking the column header sorts the list by those column values. Click the student name to view the Student Profile page.
Students can be added to an existing group (choose from the dropdown) or placed in a new group (click the plus sign to create). Click Add when done.
Step 5 – Save the Chart (optional)
Charts can be saved for later use. To save, click Save. If the chart is new, you will be prompted to click Save As.
You will be prompted to name the chart, choose if you want to share it with others or add it to your Dashboard. The ability to share charts is based on the account permission level. School administrators can share charts with users in their schools, district administrators can share charts with schools in their districts.
Once saved, choose Load chart to see the chart at any time. Choose the chart from the dropdown and click Load.
